Asian express heads to Colours!

Announcing new artists

Jung Jaeil and DPR IAN bring film scores and bold pop.

Nine fresh names are joining the lineup for the international Colours of Ostrava festival! From July 16 to 19, artists from Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan will light up the industrial area of  Dolní Vítkovice. One of the biggest highlights? A special performance by Korean composer Jung Jaeil, the genius behind the music for Squid Game, Parasite, and the upcoming Mickey 17, accompanied by the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava. The show will also feature jaw-dropping visuals by the renowned Fluks design studio. On the festival’s final day, fans will get to see the Czech debut of DPR IAN, a multitalented artist breaking boundaries with his unique style. The newly announced artists join the previously confirmed performers, including Sting, The Chainsmokers, Iggy Pop, Justice, Snow Patrol, and more.

The breaking of both, genre and age boundaries, continues. The 22nd Colours of Ostrava is bringing you more than just music – it’s a journey around the globe. “Since the beginning, our festival has been about showcasing extraordinary music from all over the world. We want to introduce our audience to fresh, exotic, and innovative sounds rooted in diverse cultures,” says Zlata Holušová, artistic director of the festival, and adds: “In recent years, we’ve been particularly captivated by Asian culture, a global phenomenon shaping music, film, and storytelling today.”

From K-pop’s unmatched energy to Oscar-winning films like Parasite and record-breaking shows like Squid Game, Korea’s cultural wave is unstoppable. At its core is Jung Jaeil, who’ll present a festival-exclusive performance. He will be joined on stage by musicians from the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava (JFO) and visuals from Fluks studio, known for their graphics for Lady Gaga's remix album and Olivia Rodrigo's world tour last year. During this more than hour-long show, audiences can expect both original compositions by the Korean composer and familiar tunes from television and film. Fans of Squid Game will experience unique renditions featuring traditional Korean instruments, while listeners can detect influences from Handel, Beethoven, or Strauss in music composed for Bong Joon-ho's films. Alongside Parasite, there will also be selections from the adventurous film Okja and a preview from the anticipated sci-fi Mickey 17, which premieres in Czech cinemas in early March.

Performing at music festivals is not new to us. Each project is unique and reflects our experiences from crossover concerts that blend popular music with traditional symphonic ensembles. We aim to reach a broad audience through our programming because we want to engage as many listeners as possible. I am convinced that thanks to this approach, visitors at Colours of Ostrava will discover another highly attractive face of our philharmonic,” adds JFO director Jan Žemla regarding their performance.

For the younger crowd, DPR IAN is here to steal the show. Starting out as a drummer in an Aussie rock band, he made waves on YouTube before joining the K-pop group C-Clown. He later launched his creative collective DPR (Dream Perfect Regime), which is all about pushing limits. “I dare say this will be the largest production we have seen in this genre in the Czech Republic so far. Although DPR IAN does not strictly fall into the K-pop category, we enjoy his cross-genre appeal. This performance will be powerful thanks to the musician's meticulous attention to visual and movement aesthetics,” teases festival's head programmer Filip Košťálek, a rising star in the music industry and recent winner of the New Kid On The Block award at the prestigious European Festival Awards.

The Asian vibes don’t stop there! Korean acts Lee Seung Yoon, Fat Hamster & Kang New, and Hypnosis Therapy will also hit the stage, alongside Taiwanese singer-producer Chih-Chih, Chih-Yin Kuo and band Outlet Drift. Representing Japan is DJ ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, and from China, Ajing is ready to impress.
